Chapter 13

Laura Dell started to dial a number and realized that she didn’t know Dr. Walters cell phone number, or if he even had one. They had always spoken in person at the museum and made their plans there. She wondered if he knew how to operate a cell phone and was embarrassed by the thought.

Laura Dell dialed the hospital instead. Hospitals have room phones now, don’t they? The phone was answered on the third ring.

“Chicago University Hospital,” a woman’s voice greeted. “Is this an emergency?”

“No ma’am,” Laura Dell answered. “I was hoping you could connect me to Dr. Walters’ room.”

“I can do that for you right away.”

The phone began ringing again and wasn’t answered until the fifth ring.

“Dr. Walters,” answered a voice that was not Dr. Walters.

“Oh, I’m sorry sir,” Laura Dell said. “I think the nurse connected me to the wrong extension. I was trying to reach Dr. Herbert Walters.”

“I don’t think there is a doctor by that name here, but I can transfer you back to the nurse’s station.”

“No, he’s not a doctor there but a patient.”

“I see,” the doctor let out a short laugh. “That would be confusing. I am afraid, though, that the patients aren’t allowed to talk on the phones this late at night. They need their rest.”

“I didn’t know.”

“It’s quite alright. Why don’t you come by during visiting hours tomorrow? You know when they are?”

“Yes I do, thank you.”

“Goodbye then.”

“Goodbye.”

Laura Dell put the phone down disappointed and a little embarrassed. Still a little wired from her spontaneous journey, she walked out into the main room of her apartment and turned on the TV. Nothing was on this late at night but she wasn’t really watching anyway. She sat on the couch staring at the changing colors and thinking about Malynne Walters.

She wondered what it would be like to meet a guy who she fell in love with and married within two months. Dr. Walters’ surprise train ride was the closest she had ever gotten to that spur of the moment. She could see how much Dr. Walters loved her. Malynne hadn’t died old but the pain was still there. It was with hopes of meeting a man like Herbert Walters PhD that Laura Dell succumbed to sleep.

“And the Lord told me to wake up!” a deep voice penetrated Laura Dell’s sleep. “He said to stop my vile ways and get to work in His service!”

Laura Dell opened her eyes and saw the televangelist walking up and down the stage. She had fallen asleep on the couch and earned a crick in her neck. She stood and fell right back down. Her foot had fallen asleep and was completely numb. Stretching out her leg, she tried to work some feeling back into it. Then she saw the time. She had less the twenty minutes to get ready and get to work.

She dressed in a rush and gave up on a stubborn strand of hair that would not stay down. She almost choked on her granola bar as she fled the apartment.

Laura Dell stopped outside the door to the museum to catch her breath and look at her watch. She was ten minutes late and already sweating.

She walked into the museum and hurried to her responsibilities. Mr. Feinman was waiting for her. He stood next to Sue looking down at the floor, his hands holding the clipboard behind his back. Laura Dell’s dread built with each step toward him. She couldn’t tell whether her footsteps had slowed but it seemed to take forever before she finally came to stand beside him.

“Do you see what I see?” he asked without looking up.

Laura Dell followed his gaze and saw the black and white sign of her winged nemesis. It hadn’t been there the other day and she could swear she cleaned the rest of it.

“Yes sir,” she answered. Her voice sounded meek even to her.

“It seems that we need to have a talk,” Feinman said. Laura Dell worked to keep the grimace off her face. “My office.” And with that he turned and walked away, leaving Laura Dell to hurry to catch up.

The first thing she noticed was that there was no pen on his desk. This isn’t going to be good.

“I assume you know why we are having this talk,” he began. “But I appear to have overestimated you in some areas and for the sake of avoiding confusion I will be blunt.”

Laura Dell couldn’t help drawing in a deep breath and holding it.

“Your actions show that you have a lack of dedication to this job. I thought that giving you a few days off would let you recharge your batteries and adjust your attitude but I was wrong. First you have your friend weasel you a free morning and then you take an indefinite lunch break without a word. Finally, you arrive late this morning and looking like that.”

Laura Dell self-consciously smoothed nonexistent wrinkles out of her clothes.

“I knew I took a risk hiring someone from your background but I expected you to at least make the effort. I am beginning to wonder whether you value your position here.”

“I do sir,” Laura Dell blurted out. “I love working in this museum and I am grateful for the opportunity.”

“I want to believe you but every time I step outside this office I find bird shit. Ever since you started there had been shit all over my museum.”

The queasiness in Laura Dell’s stomach was replaced by fire. She could admit to some irresponsible behavior but being blamed for the actions of a wild animal irked her. This man had been insufferable since the day she met him.

“I’ll clean it up right away sir,” she tried to sound apologetic. “Not just the feces, but my act as well. I have been going through a little bit of a rough patch but I have it under control.” She hated to have to explain herself to this man but she was not ready to give up on this job. “If you allow me to stay on you won’t regret it.” Pleading with those cold eyes brought back the nausea. It mixed with the fire in a painful way. Sitting under that scrutiny Laura Dell like she was going to be sick, but determination held the taste of bile from building. She was not going to give him another excuse.

“We’ll see,” he said after the long silence.

“Thank you sir,” was all she could get out.

“Now get to work and no more mistakes.”

Laura Dell stood and left the office. Outside the door she took several deep breaths, slowing her heart and calming her stomach.Under control she set out to find a mop. Her exhibit was going to be the cleanest and best organized in the whole museum. Then she was going to do something about that bird.

  1. Hey, ya'll. I realize that I was supposed to post last night before midnight but this has been a crazy busy week for me. So apologies all around and especially to the person writing after me for my tardiness. That said, I only have a few things to say about my work. The last chapter ended with a potential phone call but we haven't had Herb and LD talk on the phone so I wanted to play on his age a little with new tech. Also I got to play out the consequences of the surprise train trip, but I didn't want LD to take it laying down. I felt that she should develop a little backbone with her newfound free-spiritedness. Anyway good luck to everyone on their stories.

  2. Oooo... you said shit! Well, really, Feinman said shit. LD said feces. It's important to note the difference between their diction, as it allows us to view their character, especially with Feinman being so anal.

(two snares and a symbol fall off a cliff)

LD looks weak. She falls down after standing up. She gets an upset stomach and an increased heartbeat, caused by fear.

But, she also is professional. She says feces instead of shit, for instance. She says she'll do her best. She decides that her exhibit will be the cleanest and best organized.

I point this out, as I think different authors like to express different parts of her personality more (I had her drinking beer, for instance). But, what else can we expect from a group activity? It's kind of funny!

Good handling of the phone call! It felt real enough to me. Granted, I don't know about phone call procedure in a hospital, but I imagined it would be something like that.

Excellent usage of Feinman. Ever the angry boss, eh?

Now, let's see something done about that bird.

  3. Mmmm, well done! I really liked your line about the "winged nemesis" and I enjoyed how you continued to develop LD. As Chris pointed out, I like the fact that she is a professional and says feces instead of shit.

I am excited to see what happens to the bird... but I am scared laura dell may take drastic measures! The tension builds.

  4. Great chapter! I must first echo Allie and Chris by telling you that I loved your careful attention to diction and what a difference that makes in character. Excellent!

I also though you handled the phone call wonderfully and like that you showed us sleepy, still behind LD. I thought it was a wonderful touch to let us experience the waking up late/running late (which i'm sure we've all experienced once or twice).

Your Feinman scene was also done so well!

Now, for that bird... good luck, next author!

  5. I cracked up at the tv preacher. I also felt the last paragraph was perfect it made me feel like we might be meeting a new LD soon, maybe ready to explore the Big City.

  6. Nice chapter John! I'm glad you brought back the bird. I think it was time for him/her to make a reappearance.

I also really liked the scene with Feinman. She definetly deserved that speech and I think it was very well done.

I think the next few chapters should keep up the tension between LD wanting to make sure Feinman knows she wants her job and wanting to be with Dr. W. Thats a really good pressure in my opinion.

  7. John,

I think you did a great job with Feinman in this chapter. I loved the shit/feces dialogue. You also added in some humor that was a nice change, I agree with Tenesha that the televangelist was great.

From here I really think we need to delve into Herbert's illness, how it is going to play out, and where he and LD are going to go. We are approaching the halfway mark and I think we are going to have show a rough period for Herbert sometime soon.

    Great job John.

  8. Hahaha. Feinman let a little birdie poo get through his well-mannered boss ego thing he's got going on. I love that, it shows one of the character's strongest weaknesses.

I also really liked the televangelist. It added a bit of humor, and it also maybe gave an idea of what kind of TV Laura Dell watches - unless this was on Sunday, in which case there's televangelists on every channel.

Something else I noticed that I LOVED: Feinman saying she had asked her friend to "weasel" her a morning off. It shows that Feinman dislikes the power Dr. W has over his museum, and is probably jealous that Dr. W has more power when he just sits around and does nothing.

    Great job!

  9. I appreciate that Feinman avoided confusion by being blunt. What a nice guy. Actually, this is consistent with his character and a good addition.

Maybe the guy is an honest jerk. Maybe in the end he winds up supporting her somehow.

“I want to believe you but every time I step outside this office I find bird shit. Ever since you started there had been shit all over my museum.” Hilarious.

  10. Nice Chapter! It's pretty humorous at times, especially the whole Dr./hospital phone conversation and the bird droppings again. You worked in some nice funny details while still playing with the serious plotlines we have going.
I'm glad you contributed some more narrative pressure with Mr. Feinman's scolding. It makes me wonder if we should let her get fired ultimately. I'm also glad you included more references to Malynne, and I think we're definetly ready to get the rest of her story out on the table.
    Good work!

  11. Excellent work! I echo the compliments that have been stated above. I think we're just starting to get to the edge of the cliff before plunging into the depth of our novel. Well done everyone!

    Cheers,

  12. Good work John!

I thought this chapter was great. I loved Feinmen!! I liked that he lost his professionalism for a minute and blamed LD for there being shit all over his museum since she started. Hilarious and appropriate!!

I think the choice between the museum job and Herbert is beginning to grow. One day LD might have to make a bigger decision than just blowing off a day of work or having her friend get her out of work for a day. She might ultimately chose Herbert over her job, especially if he is sick and needs help. I think you did a great job setting up for that.

I loved the humor you brought into this chapter!! Great work!

  13. Feinman remains the asshole of second chances. Well done with your line winged nemesis I thought that was pretty funny. I am beginning to wonder what will happen to that bird though. great chapter

  14. my favorite part of this chapter was the confusion of getting a medical doctor on the phone instead of herbert. i'm glad that we don't know if herbert has a cell phone or not--it might be too high tech for him. he seems old fashioned but i think at some point we should find out his home phone number from him so LD can call if she needs to. i'm surprised she hasn't gotten it from him yet!
