Chapter Seven: LD's Day Out

Friday night Laura Dell called John William to tell him how happy she was that she had the weekend off. In the month that she had been working at the museum, she had spent almost no time anywhere other than there or at her apartment. She had barely seen the city that had become her temporary home. All her days off had been spent poring over information and reviewing notes to ensure that there were no more snafus.

Since the incident with the name plates being switched, Laura Dell had been diligent and hadn’t slipped up again. She didn’t know if Dr. Feinmen had forgiven her yet. He was still as cold as he had been and he treated her like a child. But it had been three weeks and she was beginning to wonder if he would ever get over it.

This weekend she was going to forget about Dr. Feinmen and the museum and see some of the city. Unfortunately the weather was not going to let her do much of anything outside, but there was an aquarium close to the museum that she really wanted to visit. She remembered visiting the Tennessee Aquarium once as a child and wanting to go back. She loved the bones of the past, but also loved to see some of the same creatures she studied alive today.

Laura Dell skipped over all of her work woes while talking to John William and just focused on her plans for the weekend.

“Tomorrow, I’m going to spend the morning at the aquarium. I stopped in a grabbed a brochure from them on my lunch break during my first week, but haven’t had time to go visit yet. They have baby penguins!”

“Hahaha…” Laura Dell had missed the sound of John William’s laughter. He was aware of her love of penguins and knew how excited she was about seeing them. “Maybe I’ll come visit soon and we can go see the penguins together. I like aquariums too.”

Laura Dell knew that she and her brother had very few things in common, but he did love aquariums. He preferred the turtles though. He admired the fact that they had a built in hiding place. All they had to do was pull their legs and head in and they were hidden.

“I’ll tell the penguins about you when I see them,” she told him.

. . .

Saturday Laura Dell prepared to walk the short distance to the aquarium. She dressed in layers, again missing the warmth of Alabama. She knew that it would be busy on this cold morning, but she looked forward to it. Sometimes the museum seemed so cold and devoid of life.

When she came across the turtles she stopped and spent some time reading about them. The aquarium housed a family of Alligator Snapping Turtles. She read that they used to be found often in the southeast US, but had been hunted to the point that it was rare now to find them in their original homes. Laura Dell was surprised to learn that the turtles were not as unintelligent as people commonly thought. Growing up she always made fun of John William for liking an animal that was considered to be so stupid. She looked forward to telling him about them during their next phone call.

She moved on through the museum, quickly bypassing the tarantula and the eels. She slowed down when she came upon the sea otters, sea lions, and the colorful fish that were so popular with the children also visiting the aquarium this morning. These had all been some of her favorites as a child too.

Laura Dell stopped in her tracks when she got to the Beluga Whales. It looked like one of the whales was smiling at her. She wasn’t sure it was possible for a whale to make eye contact with someone or smile at them, but that was exactly what she thought was happening.

In the moment of connection with this animal, Laura Dell realized how alone she had been. The only people she knew in this city were connected to, but also confined to, the museum. She looked around at the faces passing by her and thought about how different this city was from Siloam. In the south it was common courtesy to at least smile at people as you passed them, whether you knew them or not. Here it seemed like people looked right through her.

Perhaps her loneliness is what led her to connect so to Dr. Walters. She would never have taken to someone so quickly under other circumstances and she wondered if he felt as alone as she did. He had shown her warmth and kindness when she had no one else.

She still felt bad about the way she had acted that night she had had dinner with him and Eddie. She was ashamed that she had shut down when he had tried to talk to her. He was missing for a few days after that, but one day she walked in and he was there again sitting on the bench writing in his notebook as usual. She had tried to talk to him about it, but he said it was no big deal and he felt better. Again he reminded her of John William, as he too was a bad liar.

He continued talking to her and quizzing her and occasionally asking about her past, but she thought he was afraid to delve to deep again after what had happened that night. Some days he didn’t come at all and he never explained where he was, but he was starting to look pale and he had developed a persistent cough.

For the most part Dr. Walters talked about his time in Germany and France working on the dig, he seemed to miss it, but he was always excited about his work with the Ornithological Society. He enjoyed telling Laura Dell about his experiences and she enjoyed hearing about them.

Laura Dell moved on from the whales and continued through the aquarium. She stopped again when she got to the penguins and was immediately drawn to the smaller ones darting around. She loved to watch them dance in the water with each other.

She had been interested in penguins from the moment she realized they were birds that couldn’t fly. Her father had given her a stuffed animal of a penguin a long time ago and she had cherished it ever since. It was grey and fuzzy, a baby penguin. She had a small collection of them back in Siloam. There were only a few things that had made it from Alabama to Chicago, but the stuffed animal from her father was one of them.

She watched them for a while longer and imagined that she would tell her father about them on her visits to his grave the next time she was home.

She made her way through the rest of the museum, admiring the animals and soaking up the information about them. She stopped in the gift shop on the way out and bought a turtle stuffed animal for John Williams and a penguin one for herself. She didn’t have many things in her apartment that made it feel homey and hadn’t had time to shop much yet. These would be good additions.

Laura Dell headed home to eat lunch and regroup before spending an afternoon doing some grocery shopping. She had been living off of things that could be cooked in the microwave and soup for too long. She had a southern cookbook that her mother had given her and wanted to bring cooking back into her routine.

. . .

That night Laura Dell called John William to tell him about her day. The phone rang and rang and he didn’t answer. She left him a message, giving him a brief summary of her day, and telling him to call her back.

She cooked dinner and thought about what she was going to do the next day. She had considered finding a church, but didn’t know if she would be able to find one she fit with here. The cultural differences sometimes seemed to just be in the inflection of her voice, but sometimes she knew they ran deeper.

John William never called her back, but she hoped to hear from him tomorrow.

  1. Hey guys. I hope you enjoyed this.

I decided that some time needed to pass so that we get to see LD through a lot of her internship. I tried to explain her relationship with Dr. W through flashback. I think their relationship needs more ground work before she is ready to handle his health problems, but I did continue to hint at them.

I tried to add more to her relationship with JW too and I have a feeling he will be making an appearance soon.

I hope you enjoyed LD's time at the Shedd Aquarium filled with lots of live animals instead of bones. I enjoyed the chapters when we got to see LD outside the museum so I went with that.

I tried to add more the her relationship with her father, but am left wondering what we want to do with the mother. I had the mother give her the cookbook because that's something that a lot of southern mom's do, but I think we might want to bring in some drama with the mom soon.

Anyway, I hope you liked it.
    Thanks!

  2. Oops. My Beluga Whale link didn't work. You can see them through the same website. You can just pick them from the list of animals on the left side of the page. Sorry!

  4. Hey hey Megan!

AWESOME chapter - loved that we got some insight into the relationship between JW and LD. I think we have a complex character at this point which is interesting. She collects stuffed animals but drinks a cold one which breaks into some 3rd column development. Thanks for that touch and using the word "snafu". Amazing.

As for moving forward I think we're read to kick this thing into the next gear. Our conflict needs to accelerate but I still want to wane on the side of subtly since we have decided to pursue a relationship with Dr. Walters. I beg you fellow classmates, don't make him into an elderly creeper. Please.

Once again Megan, excellent work! Loved your addition and the details you have of LD's visit to the aquarium!

    Cheers,
    - Megan F.

  5. This is a comment for everyone.

Sorry I haven’t been commenting more quickly. I’ll do better. I like the story so far. It’s coming to life. Here are a few general comments:

Can Laura’s name be just Laura most of the time instead of Laura Dell?

Feinman is a great character. To make him realistic, he needs just one good characteristic. Bag guys who are all bad are unrealistic. I hope Sue eats him.

Dr. Walters is the part of the story that most keeps me wanting to keep reading. He is mysterious and I can’t wait to see what role he plays. This story could wind up being mostly about him.

A diatryma was a large, ferocious bird. Perhaps someone can make use of the contrast between it and a sparrow. Of course, you have Sue who could have eaten diatrymas (had she ever met one).

I feel there could be more on atmosphere. How many other people are in the museum? Are they being noisy? What else is happening in the museum?

The museum is a big monument to the glory of death. Could there be some kind of subtle theme here?

After Chapter 7, is it time for some action? A near mugging? A museum patron slips and falls and Laura gets blamed (at first)? Feinman looses his keys and throws a temper tantrum? I feel it’s time for things to speed up a little.

  6. Good chapter! I agree that it is time to move the story along some and I'm working on that in my chapter right now. I think the mentions of JW were really good and that they should probably lead up to him coming to visit.

As for developing a relationship between them, I agree with Megan F. in that we need to keep things on the side of sublte. I would really appreciate any suggestions you all have for ways you want to see that play out.

  7. Great background info I think we fully get a sense of who Laura is. I really enjoyed the trip to the aquarium and the story of how much penguins mean. I feel like we are saying birds quite a bit, could they possibly be symbolic of something or someone? (just a little food for thought)

Overall great work and Emily I am looking forward to some conflict.

  8. Great chapter, Megan!!

I really like the groundwork/transition you've built into the chapter.

I agree with Megan F. Handling the relationship (friendship) between LD and Dr. W is key with what we've built so far. I also want to second the beg to the class to not make him an elderly creeper--though I could see the misguided crush on the side of LD if it was handled with care.

As far as moving forward, I though Shawn made some great suggestions. A near mugging or LD being blamed for the fall of a museum patron at maybe a night gathering of some sort at the museum could work really well. Museums are often places to hold big "give us money" parties or whatever (i only say this because of countless invitations I've printed for events that took place at museums-it could be almost anything). Such an incident could be a great way to pull LD and Dr. W into that father-daughter/possibly misguided on LD's end relationship and could be what triggers JW to hop a plane to Chicago.

I think we're moving in a wonderful direction! Great job, Megan!

  9. Hey Megan great job this chapter! I really think that learning about LD and JW's connections to the animals (penguins and turtles) gives us great insight not only into their specific interests, but how they are different as brother sister. I also like the way you left the chapter with a bit of intrigue as JW didn't call LD back, nice work. I think the next chapter Walters needs to come back in as discussed, and JW needs to show up to set up for the true conflict of LD and Walters as discussed in class. Good job guys! -Dottie

  10. Yay! A full DAY away from the museum!

Okay my first thought was actually caused by Megan F.'s comment - I absolutely do NOT want a creepy old man kind of situation here... I really like Dr. W. and the whole creeper thing would change that.

Next, I REALLY like not being in the museum. Also, I like how LD likes penguins. It's a kind of random detail that really adds to her character. I also really like how you've moved time forward some... I don't exactly recall where we were, but I can see Dr. W's illness has progressed.

I still want a little more JW... I guess that's a good thing? He's becoming a favorite character of mine, so I'm glad you left it open for him to call her back - hopefully with some sort of mother-daughter drama???? NOT that I'm hinting...

Something in Shawn's comment I'd like to remark on: At first, I HATED the name Laura Dell, and calling her by it. Laura, while a beautiful name, is not a name I really like, and double names have always seemed slightly cumbersome. However, as her character has developed itself, I couldn't see her being called anything else... it fits her, it seems.

TL;DR: YAY! Liking what's going on! Can't wait for more!

  12. Megan,

WONDERFUL. I now understand, so poignantly, why LD connected immediately with Dr. Walters. I LOVE the fact that Dr. Walters really was a little hurt from LD leaving so quickly that night. You really get the feeling that he put himself out there. He allowed himself to be vulnerable. And you allowed that all to happen so delicately. LOVE it. Great work!

I am really enjoying the brother's presence. Great line about the turtle :)

  13. Megan,

You did some wonderful things with this chapter!

I loved that we were out of the museum for a while, but where still informed about what was going on!

I loved how we got to see glimpses of the life she was making in chicago. You clued us in to her apartment, and how she hasn't made it her home yet. We saw again how out of her element she is.

I also loved the penguins. It added a fun aspect to LD's character that I think had been lacking. It made her a real person.

I loved the line "The cultural differences sometimes seemed to just be in the inflection of her voice, but sometimes she knew they ran deeper." Love it.

You did some great setup here for upcoming chapters with JW and Dr. Walters, and I look forward to seeing where it goes!!

    Great job!

  14. Great job, Megan! You did a very nice job of summarizing information for a reader in a way that lets us get all the details straight without just telling us what we already knew. The scientific details were also nice, so good job on the research! I thought the scene with the beluga whale smiling at Laura Dell really captured the contrast between the friendliness of big cities vs. small towns. You also did a nice job preparing the stage for John William. I’m looking forward to seeing him!

  15. I really enjoyed the change of scenery with the aquarium. I am also very interested in this John WIlliam character. I am also ready for a turn of events so I am looking forward to the action to come. :)

  16. It is good that John William is becoming a bigger part of the story. We are dealing with absent father issues so it is good to see someone who filled the role before Dr. Walters came into the picture. I am also happy that we got out of the museum.
